20. Prawn Wonton Soup - One Tonne of Wontons
Wontons, wontons, wontons... what can I say about wontons? Not much, they weren't that great to be brutally honest, and I'm very, very tired. It's one of the cheapest thing on the menu at $10.50. I thought it came with noodles, but it doesn't. You get 7 generously sized morsels, which equates to about $1.50 per wonton. Not bad. It is a Wednesday lunchtime and not super busy. I nab a booth by the swaying curtains and wait for my date (my Mom). Green beans are still in season so when she arrives I recommend Number 116 (Green beans and Dace fish: $15.50) and some Chinese tea ($3.50) to share. She orders Hot Sour Soup.
Our meals arrive quickly. A massive steaming bowl of broth, veritable vegetation of Chinese cabbage (the best part) and the aforementioned wontons. The cabbage is flawless, tender with a lingering amount of crunch. The soup is rather bland, although the wontons are supposed to be the star of the dish, the soup is just second fiddle. It is a vaguely savoury chickenish broth. There looks to be a litre of it, and unsurprisingly I do not finish it. The wontons themselves are prawn-stuffed, though there tastes to be some pork in there too to extend the filling. It could use heavier seasoning and the meat is slightly tough. They are not the greatest wontons I have ever tasted. They are very filling though and after 6 (I share one with my Mom, and she agrees they are on the tough side and require seasoning), green beans, deep fried squid and some stolen hot sour soup I am stuffed. I have leftovers to take away for dinner even. (NB. KC charges 50 cents for a takeaway soup container).
Would I order it again? No. Unless I was on a budget, but then I would rather have Hot Sour Soup ($6.90). One of my least favourite things on the menu so far, but overall it was still a great meal as the Green Beans, Hot Sour Soup and deep fried squid were magnificent. I have converted my mother to KC!
Next up: a whole lotta noodles!
