11. Duck Soup - Not Just For The Marx Brothers
It's 6:00 and the joint is jumping. I snag the large table at the front as there is a group of us tonight. My notes are not so extensive when I have company. My companions are fashionably late and I am on the receiving end of the stink eye - KC is not a place to linger and occupy space idly. Finally my companions arrive. We order a mix of dishes, most fish-based as one is a pescatarian. For those so inclined, there are still a wide variety of options.
A very large black and red bowl arrives. A myriad of noodles lurking in the depths, about a third of a BBQ duck and bountiful blanched bok choy. I sip my soup, it is salty, savoury and flavoursome. The bok chop is tender vegetation, and a larger serving than the token side with the BBQ rice dishes. The noodles are perfection. Chewy, noodly ricey wonder. They are the best rice noodles I have ever eaten. According to the writing on the front door, KC make theirs in house fresh daily and it shows. Time to gnaw on some duck. I pick up the leg bone in my hands, Flintstone-style. The skin is an elastic, tastes fantastic. Food so good it makes one break out in rhyme. I snarl a hunk of duck meat in my mouth and it is juicy and succulent. Duck is notoriously easy to dry out - the masters of the wok have done it again.
The dish is terrifically tasty, but not very filling so would be ideal for a light meal, or if you wanted to save room for some of their marvellous green beans (the ones with Dace Fish is a new favourite!). I still have plenty of room to sample (ok: steal) my companions' chow. It is a bit of an optical illusion but a very tasty one nevertheless.
Unfortunately this blog will be on an unplanned hiatus for two weeks as KC is closed for a holiday. I don't begrudge them - the staff are some of the hardest-working in the hospo business, but I'm not sure what I am going to eat for the next two weeks! Suggestions please...?
