17. Roast Duck On Rice - Duck So Nice I Had It Twice! (And Bonus Iced Red Bean)
Midday on the dot on a Saturday and I am grabbing a sneaky feed before work. I am joined by both of my flatmates. One predictably orders Roti Chenai (he is even more of a creature of habit than I am, and that is saying something!). The other orders Shredded Duck Soup, and takes a very long time to arrive at this difficult decision. I am looking forward to trying this dish, though maybe on a day that is not so blisteringly hot. I purchase a cold herbal tea in a can to quench my thirst.
It is delicious, cold and, well.. herbal. A steal at just $3.
I must confess I have eaten this dish before, and recently. Although at that time I was in such a ravenous rage ("fowl-mooded" if you will..) that I forgot to take notes and had to repeat the dish. I think I will live! It arrives fairly promptly and I sample the bok choy first. Perfectly tender, as always and a generous portion. I can't resist a mouthful of rice. And another and another - juice-soaked and savoury. Time for duck. You get about one third of one which at $13.50 is great value, though some of it is lost to bone. I nibble on a leg. The skin is crispy lacquered brown: an umami kick in the tongue. Breast next, a layer of salty moist fat. Duck is not the leanest of meats but this is especially fatty today. Not that I am complaining. All I have eaten so far today is a slice of tip top and a cucumber. A chef's diet is notoriously terrible. My flatmate compliments my table manners. Apparently I eat like a gannet colony. Not just a lone gannet. I'm hungry! Don't judge me!
I demolish the duck and attack the remaining rice. I'm still peckish (get it?) so I order some rice for my flatmate to sop up her soup, and an Iced Red Bean desert, as it befits the sauna-like weather outside.
My iced red bean looks like a milkshake with an especially thick straw to suck up the goodness. It is milky in colour and has the exquisite taste of.... you guessed it: red bean. Sweet but not too sweet, slightly earthy. The milky concoction is reminiscent of bubble tea. I drain the milk and scoop up the remaining red bean with my straw. Now I'm full. Very full. A sweet end to a delicious meal.
Would I order it again? Yes and yes. With the duck I already did, and the red bean was a nice addition on a hot day. I am tempted to next try the "Tofu Far" whatever that is!
