18. Honey Pork on Rice - Meat So Sweet!
It is midday and I am joined by my flatmate (also a chef). We grab the booth farthest back. It is fairly busy but not slammed. We order food (dumplings for her) and some Chinese tea (only $3.50 for a big pot for two and goes down a treat on a cold grey day like today). My meal arrives in minutes. A chiaroscuro of crimson and brown couchon on a bountiful bed of rice and generous green of bok choy. What can I say about the bok choy that has not already been said? It is its usual excellent self and is wolfed down in a matter of moments.
The pork is moist today (on occasion it can be quite dry: case in point Char Kuey Teow), chewy to the bite. A delicious hint of honey but not sickly sweet. Boy there is a lot of it. Just as well I'm hungry! The rice, while less savoury and aromatic than what lurks beneath Soya Chicken or Roast Duck is still tasty and fatty. Like the bird: more pork. A pop of chewy gristle in my mouth. I'm starting to get rather full but I persevere. Shouldn't have stolen one of my flatmate's dumplings... A few choice morsels of rice and I am done. A last cup of jasmine tea cuts through the grease. I read my fortune in the tea leaves. Work with a chance of cooking.
Would I order it again? Personally, no. But I am not a huge fan of pork. If you are, I'm sure this dish would delight you time after time. Next up: Morepork!
